This is the second The $50 Home Makeover project that Shantel from Pink Verbena asked me to do for the DIY shoot.  It was the first video that we shot that Saturday morning, and it’s a great way to make an industrial coffee or side table!

DIY Spool Table

What you’ll need:

  • Industrial spool
  • Sander
  • Sand paper (80, 150 & 220 grit)
  • Nose / mouth mask
  • Cloth

The hardest part is going to be finding the big industrial spool that you’ll want to create the table.  Shantel got ours from the local electric company.  Once you have it, it’s smoothish sailing from there!

Next, you sand.  The spool is probably going to be very rough wood, so start with the lower number sand paper (like 80 grit) and sand the top and sides.  When you’ve completed sanding with 80 grit, move up to 150 grit, and finally 220 grit.

You may go through a few pieces of sand paper during this process, but slowly the spool is going to be smoothed down and turned into a table.

Finally, use a cloth to get any remaining dust and grit off of the table.  Once it’s wiped clean, put it in place and style!

Additionally, if you are looking to finish the table, you’ve got a few options:

  1. Drill casters to the bottom to make it mobile
  2. Add a piece of glass on top, or
  3. Finish with epoxy or polyurethane to use outside
