Have you seen those cute photos of a first birthday with the baby in a high chair and their high chair is decorated? That is exactly what I attempted to do for Birdie’s Wild One themed birthday party!
“Wild One” Fabric Garland
What you’ll need:
- Various fabrics & ribbon
- Fabric scissors
- Twine
- 2-3 shades of green card stock, 2 pieces each
- Gold glitter card stock
- Hot glue
Okay, so for the fabric: I had some scrap pieces in my craft closet, and cut those in about 1″ wide and 20″ long strips. I found that a half yard of fabric was the perfect length – 1 yard would be too much.
After I cut up my scraps, I went to Hobby Lobby and got some ribbon in whites & golds (like lace, and glitter) to fill in between the colors I already had. In their sale section, found some white tulle for $1 and cut that up too!

When everything was cut up, I cut some twine ~8 feet long. About 2 feet in, I started tying fabric & ribbon to the twine with a knot at the top and the rest falling down. I kept tying, alternating colors and textures, until I had about 4 feet worth. The extra length on the end was to make it easy to tie and then cut off.

A certain furry helper also thought it was a great place to take a nap.

You could just have the fabric banner, butttttt I helped jazz up a cake topper for Michelle, so wanted to create a larger version of that to hang in front of the garland.

In Design Space, I wrote out “wild one” in a script font, separated the letters out, arranged them and welded them together to create 1 image. I made that 11.5″ long and cut it on gold glitter card stock.
Then I used the same philodendron and tropical leaves from the cake topper, enlarged them, and cut them on 3 shades of green card stock.

Hot glue the leaves together and add glue the “wild one” on top. Loop a piece of twine through one of the holes in the sign and tie a knot. Repeat for the other side.

With the 2 parts done, the only thing left to do was hang them. I gave these to my friend and was excited to see what it was going to look like at the party. Birdie couldn’t have been cuter!

I couldn’t do all that and have a plainly wrapped gift, so I cut a little extra and put it on my gift bag.

Turns out I like making first birthday decor, or really decor for any event! The fabric garland could be used in a few ways and customized for your theme. I have a feeling I’ll be making more of these for friends in the future..

Such a brilliant idea! I need to start going through all your posts to get ideas for my sister’s bridal shower.it’s nautical themed! thanks for sharing your creativity, Kelley!
Oo that’s so exciting! My bachelorette and wedding were pretty much nautical themed ⚓️
